Inspire were appointed by Tesco to undertake the concept design of a 46,000 sqft zero carbon food retail store on the former market site in the centre of Welshpool. One of the first stores to include a site wide CHP unit to supply power not only for itself but the wider area. Constructed substantially from a sustainable timber source the design demonstrated what could be achieved if a fresh approach was taken to retailing. An open plan high roof space giving an improved environment for the customer whilst also allowing greater flexibility within the retail layout. Combined with 4 non-food retail units and a Café and its setting alongside a Grade II listed former Railway Station Bridge and canal the development has proven that in town development can assist to strengthen link trips if robust pedestrian connections are implemented early in the design process.
